Bridge of Spies was one of my favorite movies in our Oscar Challenge this year, which was very surprising to me because I am not a big Tom Hanks fan.  I mean, he’s a fine actor and all, but I just find that he plays the same character over and over again (with the exception of a few movies – namely Forrest Gump and Philadelphia).  I know it is blasphemy for me to say something negative about one of America’s favorite actors, so I will just move on.  I swear, I can practically hear the hissing and booing from here…

Outside of the scene when Tom Hanks’ character orders two “American style” breakfasts for one person, Bridge of Spies does not contain many food themed moments.  Thus, I settled on the idea of making a cocktail.  The words “White Russian” kept leaping to the front of my mind.  I mean, Mark Rylance is nominated for Best Supporting Actor in this movie and he IS a white guy playing a RUSSIAN spy, so it seemed to be the perfect fit!

Slightly whipping the cream before adding it to a White Russian helps to give this cocktail some added body and a lovely textural element.

The Allspice White Russian is a delightful little twist on the traditional cocktail popularized by The Big Lebowski.  I know this is my third drink recipe using the St Elisabeth Allspice Dram, but I am a firm believer that if you invest in a bottle of something, you better have more than one recipe to make with it!  Sooooooo, if you DID invest in this liqueur, then “you’re welcome” and if you haven’t purchased one yet, then go get it now!  This is a versatile dram that adds a ton of unique flavor and lasts a long, long time in your liquor cabinet (because a little goes a long way).

A light dusting of freshly grated cinnamon or nutmeg on top is the perfect garnish for this cocktail.

Allspice White Russian

Makes one drink

Ingredients:

  • 1 ½ ounces vodka
  • ¾ ounces Kahlua
  • ¼ ounce St Elisabeth Allspice Dram
  • Approximately ¼ cup of heavy whipping cream (You will have some left over to make multiple cocktails)
  • Garnish:  Cinnamon or nutmeg
  • Glass:  Old Fashioned

Instructions:

In a bowl, lightly beat the cream so that it thickens slightly.  You don’t want it to be a stiff whipped cream, but to simply have a little body and be “spoon-able.” (You can use a small whisk, immersion blender, or a handheld mixer to make it easier.)

Pour the vodka, Kahlua, and Allspice Dram into an ice filled old fashioned glass and stir gently.  Using a spoon, place a dollop of the thickened cream on top and garnish with a light dusting of cinnamon.  Cheers!
