It’s hard to believe that Easter is this coming Sunday. I swear, it seems like New Year’s Eve happened just a few weeks ago. I know it is such a cliché, but the years really do go by faster and faster as we get older… But I digress. As with many people, I have always associated Easter with the start of springtime and (of course) the Easter Bunny! As a kid, Easter was always much more about the “bunny” than the religious aspects of the day, and that theme has continued well into my adulthood. Who doesn’t love all of the little goodies that pop up in every store at this time of year?! I would be lying if I said I didn’t still make a small Easter basket for my husband and one for our puppies each year. I love filling the baskets with the specialty candies you can only find at Easter – Reese’s peanut butter eggs, Peeps, chocolate bunnies, and (one of my personal favorites) the Cadbury Creme Egg. In honor of the seasonal candy, I could not think a better way to celebrate Easter than with a decadent Cadbury Creme Egg Milkshake!

I love using the Immersion Blender for milkshakes. I feel like I have a lot more control over the outcome of the consistency than with a regular blender.

The Cadbury Creme Egg and I have shared a tumultuous past. I used to love the sticky sweetness as a young child and would gobble them up like a little piggy in a food trough. Then I absolutely HATED them in my preteen years and adolescence because they were so rich. The fondant center would gross me out just looking at it with the super sweet, white and yellow, gelatinous goo oozing out of the chocolate shell. (I think this change was brought on because I ate 4 of the Creme Eggs in a row the Easter before and completed OD’d on the sugar rush!) I refused to even unwrap the foil liner on a Cadbury Creme Egg for many, many years because of this aversion. Finally, I decided to give the reviled candy another chance in my adulthood. I remember slowly peeling back a tiny bit of the foil and taking a small nibble. I was rewarded with bite that consisted of mostly chocolate and a small bit of the fondant crème center. Not too bad….it was pretty good actually! I took another small bite and smiled. Yes, I found my happy medium in enjoying Cadbury Creme Eggs – eat them slowly and in moderation.

Cadbury Creme Eggs are a divisive candy – you tend to love or hate them. How do you feel about the Cadbury Creme Egg?

I will admit that the word “moderation” was not in the forefront of my mind when I made this milkshake. The Cadbury Creme Egg Milkshake is incredibly decadent. And chocolatey. And delicious. The vanilla ice cream keeps it from becoming too rich and also provides the perfect backdrop for the little Cadbury Creme Egg bits to really shine. This recipe doesn’t make a huge milkshake, but that’s OK because what you do have is so indulgent. Don’t even try to think about the calories. I’m serious – Don’t do it! The splurge is totally worth it.

Happy Easter!

Instructions:

  • Using your hands, gently crush the two Cadbury Creme Eggs between your fingers and place them in the bottom of the blender (or your blending bowl if you are using an immersion blender).  Place a heaping spoonful of hot fudge on top of the crushed candy.  Drop the scoops of ice cream on top of the chocolate and pour in a splash of milk.
  • Blend until the Creme Eggs are broken into little bits and the hot fudge has been distributed throughout the shake.  Add in more milk as needed to achieve your desired consistency and serve.
  • Optional serving suggestions:  Using a spoon, spread a layer of hot fudge around the inside of your serving glass before pouring in the prepared milkshake.  This will provide an extra burst of chocolate with each spoonful you take from the shake.  You can also drizzle some additional hot fudge on top or cut another Cadbury Creme Egg in half and nestle one half on top of shake.  (That won’t work if you like a thinner milkshake because it will sink to the bottom, so prepare accordingly.)
